ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA - November 10, 2015, Self taught artist Tricia Bethel from the tri- Island state of Petite Martinique, Grenada held her first solo exhibition entitled ‘Going Solo’ at the Grenada National Museum. Although she has been painting since the age of 11, Tricia has sold many works in the past by way of group shows, arts & craft fairs and gift shops. Her most recent pieces although impressionistic, carries with it a distinct mosaic style of beautifully selected bright colours carefully laid out besides each other leaving parts of the canvas or background visible through the painting. Her subjects are tropical in nature that ranges from boat races to flowers, trees, birds and even beautiful Caribbean portraitures.
Having spent 6 years studying in the People’s Republic of China, Tricia earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degree in diplomacy & public diplomacy. She has always balanced her art with studying and working but finally took some time off after graduation to complete her first show. Doing this enabled her to focus all her attention on painting which finally lead to a successful opening evening at the Grenada National Museum despite the weather that evening.
“I realized how fine art plays an integral role in a country’s public diplomacy strategy. It helps to build bridges between countries, transcending political differences and brings people together”, Bethel said in her opening speech.
Tricia used her time spent in China building bridges at the 6th Beijing International Art Biennale 2015, where she exhibited with over 3,000 artists from 85 different countries worldwide. Prior to this, she served as a volunteer at the Shanghai Expo 2010 where she painted at the Grenada Pavilion and greeted visitors daily.
Her portrait series at the opening was the focus of attention until she announced that they were submitted for the Annual CaFA Fair in Barbados scheduled for March 2016. “Hopefully they will be back” Tricia said as she tried to console the viewers who
were wishing they were for sale right now.
The Grenada National Museum is open to budding artists like Tricia who are willing to exhibit their works. Tricia’s show continues until Saturday 14th November, 2016 from 10 am to 6 pm.
